Located in Lexington County, the West Metro suburban area of Greater Columbia is made up of a number of small communities, all located on the west side of the Congaree River and south of the Saluda River. The City of Cayce is a residential area located just across the Congaree River from downtown Columbia & USC via the Blossom Street bridge. Older neighborhoods built from the 1940's combine with newer, upscale housing developments to offer a wide range of home options. West Columbia is also across the river from downtown Columbia by way of the Gervais Street bridge. This older community, chartered in 1894 as "Brookland", was built around a mill and a business district at Meeting & State Streets. The New Brookland Historic District is one of the most intact mill villages in the Southeast and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Housing along the Congaree River is some of the area's most expensive. Visit www.westmetrochamber.org or call the West Metro Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center at 803-794-6504. West Columbia features stores, restaurants and unique shops in its Vista West Area.

The town of many names...

West Columbia was first chartered as a town in 1894 under the name "Brookland". The town took its name from the many creeks and brooks that ran through the area to the Congaree River. The postal service designated the area "New Brookland" since there already was a town named Brookland. Now you know why the New Brookland Tavern is so named. Originally, ferry boats were used for taking the people across the Congaree River to jobs in Columbia. The Guignard family built the first bridge, a wooden structure, across the Congaree River. As New Brookland's population grew, a trade center developed along Meeting Street and State Street, where dry goods, a grocery store, mercantile stores and vegetable markets opened. With the charter as a town, there also came a certain desire to be independent and self sustaining. On March 3, 1905, a fire destroyed the community. Only one home on Spring Street was left intact. Years of reconstruction followed. The river flooded every spring until the dam at Lake Murray was built. The heaviest flood on record saw the water reach 20 feet over the bank. The wooden bridge was replaced by the Gervais Street Bridge in 1927. In 1936, the charter was changed to rename the town "West Columbia."
